SOVEREIGN GRACE BAPTISTS

Founded 1954

Membership: est. 5,000

The first "Sovereign Grace Bible Conference" was led by Rolfe P. Barnard in 1954 in Ashland, Kentucky. They maintain a loose fellowship of congregations and do not keep membership statistics, but they are held together by a common commitment to the First London Confession of 1646. Like the Reformed Baptists*, these congregations were strongly influenced by the neo-Calvinist movement of the mid-twentieth century. By the 1980s doctrinal differences led to a separation of the Sovereign Grace churches from the Reformed Baptists. The Sovereign Grace churches tend to place greater emphasis on the New Covenant than the Old Covenant and do not hold as strictly to observation of Sunday as a Sabbath day.
